Edition 02 – Where the premium earns its place

In travel, paying more can make a huge difference. The question is whether you’ll feel that difference once you’re there.

Take a room upgrade. Another £2,000 might buy you the privacy or view that changes the whole stay. Or it might get you a little more floor space in a part of the hotel you like less.

The same applies beyond the room. A more expensive flight could cut hours from the journey and get you there rested. Paying more for the right hotel might put you exactly where you want to be, with the kind of service that means you never have to think twice about the details.

In cases like these, the premium has a purpose.

But a higher price doesn’t automatically mean a better trip.

The hotel everyone is talking about might be excellent – and still be completely wrong for you. The top suite may sound impressive on paper without giving you anything you particularly care about. Sometimes the sensible choice is to spend less on one part of the trip so you can put the money somewhere it will make more of a difference.

This is where price and value part company.

Most people don’t mind paying more when they understand what the extra spend is giving them. An additional £2,000 feels very different when you can see that it buys you something you’ll use, appreciate or remember.

That’s why, when we’re comparing options for a client, we’re less interested in asking which is the most expensive or prestigious.

We want to know what the premium changes.

For one traveller, that might be the room. For another, the direct flight will matter far more. And sometimes our advice is simply to keep the money.

That doesn’t mean the more expensive option isn’t good. It just means it isn’t adding enough to this trip, for this client.

Travelling well isn’t about spending as much as possible. It’s about knowing where spending more will improve the experience – and where it won’t.
